Angoon

Fishing in Alaska
Whether casting for freshwater trout at a lakeside, angling
for steelhead in a fast-running island stream, or trolling
aboard a charter boat in saltwater for lunker king salmon
the fishing just doesn't get any better anywhere than you'll
find in Alaska. And Southeast Alaska's Angoon, like a
number of off-the-beaten path communities, offers visitors
these very options . Photo courtesy of Alaska Travel

About Angoon: The Tlingit Native village of Angoon (pronounced "AnGOON") is the only permanent settlement on Admiralty Island. It lies 55 miles southwest of Juneau and 41 miles northeast of Sitka.

The community boasts lodge, B&B, and inn accommodations for visitors who come to the community for quality saltwater and freshwater fishing, nature viewing, and wilderness photography – especially for the Admiralty Island brown bear whose populations and concentrations along the shore and in the forests are among the highest in the nation.

(The Native name for the island is Kootznoowoo, meaning "Fortress of the bears.")

In addition, the locale boasts the largest nesting population of American Bald Eagles to be found anywhere as well as notable concentrations of photographable killer whales (orcas) and humpback whales.

Across the Angoon harbor, on nearby Killisnoo Island, a small cluster of private summer homes has grown. Access to Admiralty Island and the community is principally by air from Juneau or Sitka and by the ferry vessels of the Alaska Marine Highway System.
