About Hoonah: This community – the largest Tlingit village in Alaska – is a long-established Alaska Native community whose roots in the Glacier Bay / Icy Strait area stretch back into prehistory. Tribal legend relates that the community's original ancestoral home was actually within Glacier Bay until advancing ice forced the community to move to its present location on the northest shore of Chichagof Island. The town lies 40 air miles west of Juneau. Air access to Hoonah is by small aircraft, which land at the village paved airport or the local seaplane base. Ferries of the Alaska State Marine Highway System make regular port calls.
Commercial fishing and local government provide the mainstays of the economy, however the town has for some time also attracted a number of recreational fishers and hunters plus photographers and hikers attracted by the scenic forests and waters.
About Icy Strait Point: This site, just one and a half road miles from Hoonah, is unique among Alaska ports. For one thing only one cruiseship a day can visit there. And no one actually lives there. There's no city government. No schools. No churches. No homes. But what you'll find and experience there receives rave reviews as a purpose-built Tlingit Native Cultural Center and soft adventure base.

Owner and operator is the Huna Totem Corporaton, an Alaska Native village corporatoin authorized by the federal Alaska Native Settlement Act of 1971. Core structure on the site is a former cannery building that had been closed and shuttered for decades. The newly renovated building now houses a museum celebrating all things Tlingit plus fascinating exhibits and memorabilia from Alaska's 20th century salmon canning days. Elsewhere visitors find a variety of high-quality recreational options. Among them: the Zip Rider, the world's longest and fastest zipline; the Bear Search (a guided quest in search of Alask bears and other wildlife); flightseeing trips over nearby Glacier Bay; saltwater fishing for salmon and halibut, plus bicycling and nature walks. Too, the site offers qualitiy restaurants that feature Alaska seafood and shops that sell a wide array of quality Alaska Native handicraft. The Icy Strait Point complex, incidentally, is not really closed to the public, even when there's a cruiseship anchored offshore. The site website states "Icy Strait Point is open to the general public anytime there is a ship in port. There is no charge to visit Icy Strait Point so come on down and walk on our trails, skip rocks on our beaches, browse through the retail shops and view the historic canning line and museum. Take a break and sit down in any of our restaurants for a fantatic view of Port Frederick and Icy Strait. Guests not arriving by cruise ship will be able to book tours that depart before the ships arrive by contacting info@icystraitpoint.com."
