About Hyder, Alaska, USA
and Its Nearby Good Neighbor Stewart,B.C., Canada:
Hyder is nestled at the head of Portland Canal, a 70-mile-long fjord which forms a portion of the US / Canadian border. Hyder lies just 2 road miles from Stewart, British Columbia, and is 75 air miles from Ketchikan. It is the only community in southern Alaska accessible by road. There is, unfortunately, no ferry connection to the community but access is possible and pleasureable via the paved Stewart-Hyder Access Road from Mile 97.5 on the inland British Columbia Cassiar Highway.

Black bears populate the Alaska landscape from the bottom of the Southeast
panhandle from Hyder north to Yakutat, as well as in Southcentral Alaska and
the Interior regions of the 49th State. This particular critter was photographed
on the Kenai Peninsula.

Hyder folk refer to their community as the "Friendliest Ghost Town in Alaska." Fishing is considered excellent for halibut, salmon, shrimp and crab. There is a health clinic, a public library, some restaurants, cafes, motels, bars, a post office and a museum associated with the visitor center. The locale boasts spectacular scenery as well as eagles to watch and bears to photograph.
Situated at the end of the Portland Canal and across from Alaska's Misty Fjords National park, Stewart, B.C. visitors should by all means visit the famous nearby Bear Glacier, one of a very few "blue glaciers" in the north country. Locals claim it possesses the "easiest access in the world." Also, say Hyder and Stewart citizens, visitors should take a walk on one or more of the hiking trails in the area. In the process they will view evidence of old gold and silver mines plus magnificent coastal forests, mountain streams and alpine meadows.
Sport fishers should try the amazing fishing in the numerous streams and lakes. Visitors can watch the spawning of Alaskan Chum Salmon at Fish Creek. If saltwater angling is a visitor's thing, he or she should book a fishing excurson on Portland Canal to catch fish, prawns and crab. And perhaps see a majestic killer whale in the process.
Don't, say the locals, miss out on the spectacular drive from Stewart to Hyder. And follow the road through the Salmon River valley right up to the old Granduc mine along the Berendon Glacier. Along the way keep an eye out for a spectacular view of Salmon Glacier, the fifth largest in the world. The road is reported to be easily negotiable by automobiles and RVs.
