Kake

Kake from the air About Kake: The Tlingit village of Kake lies 38 miles northwest of Petersburg and 95 miles southwest of Juneau. It is located on the northwest coast of Kupreanof Island along Keku Strait.

In recent years the community has actively embraced the Alaska visitor trade with the creation of two new modern lodges in addition to one previously established there. The community also contains stores and restaurants plus an active sport fishery near at hand for abundant salmon, trout and halibut.

On a prominent bluff  overlooking the central portion of Kake, stands the tallest totem pole in Alaska. It was – at the time it was carved for exhibition at the 1970 World Expo in Osaka, Japan – the tallest such pole in the world. The 136-foot monument was created for the village by the skilled craftsmen of Alaska Indian Arts of Haines, Alaska.

Kake is a major Tllingit village easily accessed from Juneau and Petersburg by light aircraft and  by the ferry vessels of the Alaska Marine Highway System. It also provides ready supplies of food, fuel, and other needs for yachts-people sailing north or south along the Inside Passage.

In the foreground of the photo at the right are commercial properties as well as a number of beach homes looking out from the northwest coast of Kupreanof Island along Keku Strait. In the middle right portion of the photo are neat rows of residences and the towering object on the bluff in the near center is Alaska's tallest totem pole. (Photo courtesy of the City of Kake)

Kake boaters in regalia. If you're into celebrations and cultural heritage, its hard to imagine a more pleasurable experience than to join the residents of Kake for their annual one-day Kake Dog Salmon Festival. The event celebrates the annual harvest of chum (commonly nick-named "dog") salmon each year. The late-July party got started several years ago and now draws visitors from nearby Juneau and Sitka and other communities. Events include canoe and foot races, a fish filleting contest. a herring toss, line dancing, plus a community barbecue and more. The Alaska Marine Highway System of modern ferries (as well as air service from Juneau and Sitka) provides year 'round easy access to the community of 700 –  as does special high-speed round-trip catamaran transportation on the day of the event.
