About
Ketchikan: The Alaska visitor looking for totem
poles to photograph will find fertile ground indeed in and around
Ketchikan – Alaska's "First City" port of call for many cruiseship,
state ferry, and airline passengers. In fact the island community lays
claim
to being the home of more totems than any other community in the world.
Magnificent monuments of cedar may be found throughout Ketchikan: in the municipality's well-groomed city park, at the totem park in the nearby village of Saxman, within Totem Bite State Historic Park about 10 miles north of downtown, and elsewhere.
Pictured at right is a Totem Bite replica of a typical Tlingit Native clan house. It was constructed in the 'thirties by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The park is situated on the site of a former Tlingit summer campsite overlooking the waters of Tongass Narrows. A path winds its way past 14 Tlingit and Haida poles offering additional photo ops plus scenic views of the waterway.
Of course there is a lot more to see and do in Ketchikan besides viewing totem poles. Hiking trails abound, including a popular trail to the top of Deer Mountain where the "aerial" view of Ketchikan provides a special opportunity for photographers. Saltwater sport fishing for giant kings, silvers, and other species of salmon around Revillagegedo ("Revilla") Island can be hugely fun and productive. Freshwater angling in nearby lakes and streams is no less rewarding. Sightseeing opportunities include day-cruise tours on the water and comfortable motorcoaches on land. A day cruise to the nearby wilderness forests, mountains, and waters of Misty Fjords National Monument can be especially memorable.
Downtown Ketchikan provides two "must see" experiences: First, there's the Alaska Publc Lands Information Center containing Native cultural and heritage exhibits, Southeast Alaska wildlife mounts, lots of natural resources information plus film and other interpretive exhibits. The other prime attraction is the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show staged daily to show the skill and prowess of Southeast Alaska lumberjacks in log rolling contests, tree climbing races, chopping competition, and other demonstrations of Alaska logging know-how.
