About Pelican: For the sportfishing enthusiast (or the photo fan), tiny Pelican (population 113 according to the State of Alaska) has a lot to offer. Situated 70 miles west of Juneau and 80 miles north of Sitka the community lies about 10 miles from the mouth of Lisianski Inlet on Chichagof Island. Nearby residential areas Sunnyside and Phonograph (yes, that’s the name) are residential areas situated on either side of Pelican and both have close ties to the community.
Notes the community website (www.pelican.net): "The visitor will have a lot to see and do without even leaving the Pelican City limits. The boardwalk stretches over a mile from one end of town to the other. Strolling the boardwalk you have a birds eye view of the harbor and adjacent beaches. Here you are apt to see land otter, mink, deer, Bald Eagles, ducks, geese, and schools of herring. From mid-July through September, salmon can be seen from the Pelican Creek Bridge as they swim upstream to spawn."
The mountains, waters, forests and streams hereabouts are simply gorgeous. The waters nearby provide prime fishing grounds for sport as well as commercial fishing craft. Other visitor things-to-do include kayaking, hiking and bird watching. Don't, however, expect to see pelicans. The town was named by its founder Kalle Raataikainen for his fish packer, The Pelican.
Several businesses provide dining, cocktail, and accommodations services for visitors. Daily air and twice-monthly state ferry service from Juneau provides easy access to Pelican in the summer. Since the ferry calls are limited it is recommended that visitors schedule access by air one direction and vessel service by the Alaska Marine Highway System the other.
