Publisher's note: In October, 2008 Petersburg earned a coveted ranking from CNN.com/travel. The network named the city one of its "Top 10 bed-and-breakfast towns," ranking the community fifth in a world-wide competition after Santa Barbara, California; Troncones, Mexico; Duluth, Minnesota; and Annapolis, Maryland. Way to go Petersburg!
About Petersburg: Nothing symbolizes the Norwegian pride and heritage of Petersburg more than the good ship Valhalla, shown at left beside the Sons of Norway Hall.
Each year, during the Little Norway Festival staged over the third weekend in May, the vessel is actually put to sea in the course of "raids" and other good fun that also includes folk dancing, halibut filleting and cooking contests, parties, and costume competition. Viking ships are additionally honored with this implant (see insert) on one of the city's most traveled sidewalks. (Mike Miller photos.)
Of course, the community has a lot going for it in addition to pride of heritage. For the visitor a trip to the excellent Clausen Memorial Museum reflects not only Petersburg “then” but Petersburg “now.” At the entrance to the museum building there’s a photogenic fountain-sculpture called “Fisk” which means “Fish” in Norwegian. The 11-foot work in bronze depicts schools of salmon, halibut, and herring – all species that are important to this fisheries harvesting and processing community. The sculpture was created in 1967 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Alaska Purchase in 1867. Inside you’ll find the huge reflector from a genuine Alaska navigational lighthouse, the wall-mounted once-largest king salmon ever caught, and countless other items of Alaska history.
Too, if you’ve been in Petersburg for a time and haven’t yet taken a picture of an American Bald Eagle, mosey over to Eagle’s Roost Park and aim your camera lens skyward. There’s frequently at least one eagle in residence, resting or roosting on a tall tree.
Looking for a place to have a picnic? The Sandy Beach Picnic Area beckons from the end of Sandy Beach Road, about two miles from downtown. For a more ambitious outing drive 17 miles south of Petersburg along Mitkof Highway to the pavement’s end where you’ll find the Blind Slough Recreation Area picnic site with tables, grills, group shelters and restrooms. Swimming in the saltwater slough is permitted – but at the swimmer’s risk. You'll find another swimming option at Mile 20 Mitkoff Highway. It's known by the curious name of Man Made Hole.
