The island measures 145 miles by 45miles, making it the largest in Southeast Alaska, second largest in Alaska (after Kodiak) and third largest in the U.S. (after second-place Kodiak and first-place Big Island of Hawaii.) Most of Prince of Wales Island lies within Tongass National Forest, which is itself the largest national forest in the nation.
But there’s much more to P.O.W. than just being big. A large number of pleasurable bed and breakfasts, inns, lodges, U.S. Forest Service rental “cabins in the wilderness” plus private and public campgrounds make it easy to find accommodations that fill a variety of visitor preferences. Most of these places are accessible along more than 2,000 miles of roads through forests, along scenic beaches and mountain vistas. Of these miles 105 are paved and 150 miles are improved gravel. You can visit no fewer than a dozen fascinating communities. Most roads are suitable for standard cars and vehicles.
So, you’re probably asking: aside from scenic driving, what’s to see an do?
POW’s guidebook suggests the following: Float a kayak long the seashore; Rent an ATV for backcountry adventure; Book a salmon or halibut fishing day-cruise; map your own totem tour to see magnificent works of native art in Klawock, Hydaburg, Kasaan, and Craig; Fly, boat or hike to a remote U.S. Forest Service cabin for days of blissfull solitude.

Or explore the underground karst cave called El Capitan (or “El Cap”) northwest of Whale Pass. The cave has been developed and protected by the U.S. Forest Service for its treasure trove of geological and zoological features – including human remains estimated to be about 9,200 years old! Bear remains discovered in the cavern are estimated at 45,000 years! The Forest Service conducts guided two-hour walking tours through portions of the cave twice daily in the summer.
