Saint Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral, pictured at right, is located in the center of downtown Sitka, and is an exact replica of the original cathedral built on the site between 1844 and 1848 when Sitka was the headquarters and principal city of "Russian America." In 1966 the old structure was destroyed by fire but not before nearly all the building's priceless icons and other historic furnishings were rescued from the flames by heroic townspeople. These were Sitkans of many faiths who rushed into the flaming building – at some peril to their own lives – and saved the irreplaceable objects. The bulbous-domed cathedral today remains the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska. It is probably the most photographed religious structure in Southeast Alaska and welcomes visitors. About Sitka: Sitka-by-the-Sea – as many call the community – has many visitor attributes and experiences to offer in addition to Saint Michael's Cathedral. For one thing the community's physical setting is absolutely stunning, probably the most beautiful in Alaska with its sparkling watefront facing out upon hundreds of large and little islands within Sitka Sound. To its rear the city is bordered by green and gorgeous peaks and valleys. There are numerous important places to see and things to do. Among them:
Castle Hill where on October 18, 1867 the Impreial flag of the Russian czars came down and the Stars and Stripes of the United States of America was raised; the old Russian Cemetery where a Russian Princess lays buried; the Russian Bishop's House, built in1842 for Alaska's first Russian Orthodox Bishop and today restored by the U.S. Park Service literally as a 19th century time capsule containing original furiture, appliances, and period wardrobes;
Sitka National Historical Park, located on 100 acres of land once occupied by the Kiksadi Tlingit Indian people who fought a monumental, but ultimately futile, battle with cannon-equipped Russians; Sheldon Jackson Museum, the oldest concrete structure in Alaska and the repository of one of the nation's oldest and most valuable collections of Alaska Native artifacts from all over the state;
Sitka Historical Museum, a place of displays and artifacts where vsitors can even view a model of Sitka as it looked in 1867, the year of historic transfer from Russia to the U.S.; exhibitions by Sitka's much-honored all-female New Archangel Dancers with a repertoire of authentic, exciting Russian dance routines; and, equally colorful, authentic and historic dance renditions by the traditionally-garbed Sitka Native group Sheet'ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi Dancers.
Of course, there is much more than history here. The hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, sigtseeing, flightseeing, and camping opportunities are near-endless.
Sitka is accessible by jet flights from Seattle, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Anchorage, and by the passenger and vehicle ferries of the Alaska Marine Highway System.
