No Hollywood movie set this, Broadway Street in Skagway is the real thing,  a genuine survivor of the 1898 stampede for gold in the Canadian Klondike country.  The Red Onion Saloon at that time was (and still is) one of the community's favorite watering holes. Upper floor was a brothel in the old days. Today it serves as a museum depicting the lifestyle of the madams and their  "girls"  who lived and worked there. Other stores and businesses are equally authentic. (Mike Miller photo)

About Skagway: This authenticformer gold rush town lies on the northern end of Taiya Inlet, some 90 air miles northwest of Juneau. It’s easily accessible by small plane air service or by the ferries of the Alaska Marine Highway System. It’s also a popular cruiseship destination. Portions of the community fall within the U.S. Klondike Trail National Historical Park which celebrates the frantic stampede to Canada’s gold-rich Klondike country during the 1890s. Prospectors arrived in the American city by the thousands, bound for neighboring Canada by way of the nearby White Pass Trail

Attractions and things-to do that make Skagway a favorite stop on a trip through Alaska are many, among them for the outdoors person, hiking the famed (and restored) 33-mile Chilkoot Trail from nearby Dyea. Shorter but pleasant lake and mountain day hikes include the Lower Dewey Lakes Trail.

Too, there are gold panning excursions, salmon bakes, float tours, beer sampling at local breweries, fishing trips, garden visits, flightseeing options and (not to be missed) the historic old McCabe College concrete building (Alaska’s first) which houses the community’s City Hall as well as an extensive display of Alaska historical items and artifacts. The twice-daily Days of ’98 show at the Eagles Hall has been amusing and educating audiences literally for decades. The city’s visitor center is located within the Arctic Brotherhood Hall on Broadway Street. It’s a gold rush era  structure (at far right in the picture above) whose exterior consists of more than 8,833 pieces of driftwood!

Number one visitor attraction and thing-to-do in Skagway is to take a ride on the historic White Pass & Yukon Route narrow gauge railway constructed in 1898 from tidewater Skagway to Carcross and, ultimately Whitehorse in Canada. The railcars are of vintage design and the seats within them can be reversed going up-valley or down so that everyone always has an awesome mountain valley view en route from sealevel to or from the White Pass summit during full or half-day excursions.

Another hugely scenic option, if you are traveling by car or RV, is to drive from Skagway to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Canadian Yukon Territory by car or RV over the mountain-rimmed South Klondike Highway. (This road leads ultimately to the Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway and the option to head north into the main body of Alaska or south to Whitehorse, Y.T.)
