At right: An Alaska brown bear (grizzly) stands poised to grab migrating salmon in Anan Creek near Wrangell. The site is a favorite with visitors because of the U.S. Forest Service Anan Wildlife Observatory located there. Access is easy aboard Wrangell-based sightseeing vessels. (Photo courtesy of Wrangell Convention and Visitor Bureau; photo by Trish Beach)About Wrangell: There’s a lot of history to this town in the heart of Southeast Alaska. It's located north of Ketchikan, south of Juneau, and Petersburg and adjacent to the Stikine River that flows westerly from Canada into the Inside Passage. The Tlingit Indians were here first, of course, then the Czarist Russians came in 1834 followed by the English in 1839. It became an American port community in 1867 with the purchase of Alaska from Russia. Not a lot remains from the Russian/English eras but the Alaska Native tradition survives well and beautifully in the form of totemic art to be found on Chief Shakes Island (reachable by footbridge in the middle of a community port complex). There stands a magnificent Tlingit tribal house and a collection of exceptional totem poles. Totems located elsewhere in the city include Kik-setti Totem Park and the community’s outstanding museum.
Other notable sights-to-see and things-to-do include:
Petroglyph Beach, a designated state historic site of ancient carved symbols and pictures on large beach boulders;
Rainbow Falls, a photogenic 100-foot waterfall at the end of a rewarding U.S. Forest Service trail through Southeast Alaska rainforest country;
Nemo Point, which offers probably the best of several auto-accessible and easy-to-reach picnic areas with outstanding views of Zimovia Strait;
And (not to be missed!) there’s the U.S. Forest Service Observatory at Anan Creek where black bears and brownies come to feast on an annual abundance of salmon. The site is accessible aboard easily-arranged day cruise vessels.
The community is served by daily jet service from Seattle and Alaska communities, smaller-plane air service, frequent service by ferries of the Alaska Marine Highway System, and by port visits by small cruise vessels.
