Moose may be found throughout much of Alaska.
In the southeast panhandle herds populate the
areas around Haines and Berner's Bay (on the
mainland between Haines and Juneau). They also
inhabit the drainages of the Taku, Stikine, and Unuk
rivers. Largest numbers in the Southeast region,
however, are to be found around the more northerly
community of Yakutat.

About Yakutat: This community is sort of a sleeper. The rivers and streams and saltwater hereabouts have been recognized and treasured for decades by knowledgeable fishers for their abundance of steelhead trout and no fewer than four species of fighting salmon (king, coho, sockeye, and pink). And the lands and open spaces of the area have also been treasured for years by savvy professional photographers and observers seeking to capture – in digital image or in memory – the brown (grizzly) bears, moose, and other creatures of the forests and forelands. The big game hunting thereabouts has likewise been extolled in film and print.
But less well known are the tremendous opportunities for regular vacationers to sample and enjoy the great beauty of this portion of The Great Land, Alaska.
Yakutat’s website (www.yakutat.net) recommends that you “jump on a charter boat and head up to Disenchantment Bay and marvel at the exciting sites and sounds of the largest tidewater glacier in North America, the ever moving Hubbard Glacier. Or rent a car in Yakutat and take a drive to Harlequin Lake to view and photograph the wildflowers, the awesome freshwater glacier, and the iceberg-strewn lake.”
The website likewise extols the hiking trails around Yakutat such as the short hike into the Russell Fjord or the more challenging walk into Situk Lake. Too, there’s kayaking (singles or doubles) in Yakutat and surfing.

Surfing? In Alaska?
Absolutely.
The Yakutat surfing action is comparable to many a site in California or in Hawaii. There’s even a well-equipped surfing shop in town where you can rent gear and get directions to the best waves and waters running.
Think of the bragging rights you’ll have when you get home and your friends and neighbors ask where you went and what you did on your vacation.
You can say, simply: Alaska. Yakutat. Surfing. Awesome!
